Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS Now Available for Download
The fifth and final point release for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS has officially been launched and is ready for download. This release brings a variety of updates and improvements to the long-term support (LTS) version of Ubuntu.
Delayed Release: What Happened?
Initially scheduled to be available a few weeks ago, the release was delayed due to the postponed launch of Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS. With the new release finally here, users can now access the updated installer and software packages.
What’s New in Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS?
This update comes with an installer image (ISO) that includes all the software, security patches, and stability improvements that have been released since the last ISO update. This means fewer updates are required after installation, making for a smoother and quicker setup.
New HWE Stack and Linux Kernel 6.8
Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS features a new Hardware Enablement (HWE) stack, which includes the Linux Kernel 6.8 by default. Additionally, updated graphics drivers, backported from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, ensure better hardware compatibility for users.
Updated ISO for Ubuntu Flavors
All long-term support flavors of Ubuntu, including Xubuntu 22.04.5 LTS, Ubuntu Kylin 22.04.5 LTS, and Ubuntu Studio 22.04.5 LTS, have also received refreshed installer images, allowing users of these variants to benefit from the latest updates.
Already Running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS? No Need to Reinstall
If you’re already using Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, you don’t need to download the new ISO or perform a fresh install. All of the included updates, including Linux Kernel 6.8 and the new graphics drivers, were rolled out as part of the regular software updates. Simply run the Software Manager to apply these updates if you haven’t already.
Future Support for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
While this is the last point release in the ‘Jammy Jellyfish’ series, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS will continue to receive support until 2027. Additionally, extended security updates will be available through Ubuntu Pro, providing even longer-term support for enterprise users.
Ready to Upgrade? Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Is Available
For those eager to move on, upgrading from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is now possible. The critical bug that caused delays in the upgrade process has been fixed, allowing users to upgrade smoothly when they’re ready.
